Hi, Elizabeth,
Let me try to cast a little light into some of the confusion here. Abrahams' eldest daughter Elizabeth most likely did marry both Noble BUTLER, and certainly, William SHIPPEN. However, it was Abraham's THIRD or FOURTH daughter, ELIZA, who married John GATES. Abraham names both daughter Elizabeth Shippen and daughter Eliza Gates as heirs in his will. It is true that he (Abraham) allowed William Shippen 1 year's use of his farm after his death, and the Shippens were already living on the farm in 1850 prior to Abraham's death. It is possible that Elizabeth was born in Ohio, maybe even Rlihu, but he always claimed Indiana. His eldest son John was almost certainly born in South Carolina. I am interested in your connection with the family. Cheers,
Jim Boyce
