Hello Alice Benedict:
Had to contact you again.Finding you out and your wealth of knowledge and information about the Engemann surname has me quite excited!I have a lot of "Engemann" questions I would like to ask you.
My great-great-grandfather and his brother immigrated from Westphalia and arrived in the Port of New Orleans in 1834.
My g-g-grandfather Charles (Ludwig Carl?) Engemann, Sr. and his brother Henry (Heinrich) Engemann, Sr. both settled in east central Missouri, more specifically, Warren County, Missouri.
Henry Sr. moved his family to Henry County MO in west central MO around the late 1870's. 5 of his 6 children moved with him except for Henry Jr. who stay in Warren County and had 7 children, 6 of which were male.
The Engemanns that moved to Henry County dropped the last "n" around the turn of century. No one know for sure shy... maybe to be "more" American, shorter, others kept spelling it that way (?).
The "Engeman " name w/o the last "n" is common around Montrose, MO (Henry Co.) south of Clinton, MO in west central MO.
The Engemann name is quite common in Franklin and Warren County, MO phone directories... and area Catholic cemeteries. Both branches have regular family reunions and some occasionally attend the others.
I am wondering specifically from where the two brothers cam in 1834? I have heard Warburg, Westphalia.
Did they have any other brothers or relatives that also immigrated to America?
We heard they had a brother George that stayed in Germany.
I do not know who there mother and father were. Could it be Johann Engemann and M. Dierks?
How and when do you show our branches tying in?
How could I get a copy of you book?Hope to hear more.
Thanks...
Robert Engemann
