It's good to hear from you, Julie.

I have your ancestor, John Willford, son of Joseph and Mary Ann Enochs Willford in my database as born Wayne Co., Ohio, 2 January 1824. I am descended from Mary Ann Enochs and Joseph Willford's eldest son, Joseph.

What I know about Mary Ann Enoch's family is mostly through my Mother Minnie Althea King who was a gg-granddaughter of Mary Ann Enochs. After her husband died, Mary Ann lived with her eldest son Joseph and his family. My mother's grandmother (i.e. my g-grandmother), Caroline Willford was born into Joseph's family in 1850 and she was about age 16 when Mary Ann Enochs died on 13 September of 1866. So we assume Caroline Willfor learned these family tradition from her grandmother during that time.

According to traditions which were passed down through this g-grandmother Caroline Willford, my maternal grandmother Minnie Myrtle Wiley and my mother Minnie Althea King, Mary Ann Enochs had three siblings. One was her brother Joseph Enochs (or Eneix, as he often spelled it) who became quite a prominent person and who moved in political circles. His life is fairly well documented. I have a copy of a letter written by him which he signs "Your unkel, Joseph Eneix" to Mary Ann Enochs's son William Willford. In the letter, he mentions "Mr. Gouddy" as William's brother-in-law. Mary Willford, a daughter of Mary Ann Enochs and Joseph Willford was married to a James Goudy. Joseph Enochs also makes reference to the Dr. Samuel Willford, another son of Joseph Willford and Mary Ann Enochs, referring to him as "your brother the doctor."

The other two siblings of Mary Ann Enochs, according to my mother, are an "Elmes" (or "Ealmes") Enochs and another sibling of unknown name.

The name of Mary Ann Enochs's father was passed down to my by my mother as John Enochs. If I recall correctly, she thought that John Enochs's father's name (i.e. Mary Ann's grandfather) was also John but she was not certain.

Mary Ann Enochs's mother's name was Katherine (Katie) Gaar Foulk. My mother said that Katie's mother's name was Katherine Gaar, so that Katie was her mother's namesake having been given her mother's surname as her second given name. Some, however, have assumed that Katie Gaar Foulk had the name Gaar as a surname from a marriage which would have been previous to her marriage to John Enochs, Mary Ann's father. Katie may have been widowed from John Enochs about 1790 since she married a neighbor, William Boyles about 1792 and had two children with him. She and her husband and one of the sons later moved to Nebraska.
