Jim, I noticed on all the inquiries you have answered there is a tone of 'we're stupid to ask a general question'. I have left messages on many sites with less info than the ones you have answered and got connected to cousins I would never have found if I hadn't been on these sites.
Try finding the Woods side with only states to give for info and on the forum my husband found 4 different cousins to answer him.
Yes you have to do the census----been to Kansas City? We have spent hours there and in court houses and cemeteries but the greatest finds I have had were finding lost "cousins" on these sites.
I am writing this in hope others were not discouraged from asking a few questions before they have "all" the facts.
