Hi Diane,
Yes, there are military records for the War of 1812. Try googling the National Archives and tracing down to War of 1812.I found a payroll list of 10 soldiers with the Eppes name, one of whom was Captain Daniel Eppes of the Virginia Militia. He was the only Captain, so, this looks like he is your guy.
A cautionary note:The Eppes/Epes/Epps family often used the name Daniel.My line shows six of them in a row.Your Daniel is not one of them because they were in North Carolina and Tennessee in 1812.
I suspect that more details can be gleaned from the second volume of the 3-volume set of Ancestors and Descendants of Francis Epes I of Virginia by John Frederick Dorman.I have not been successful, so far, in obtaining a copy.
