Cathy, concerning the origin of ERTEL, I quote from a letter I received from Germany:
The name ERTEL goes back to the meaning of "major of a villiage" (in Gernman "Bürgermeister" +ORTLER =OERTEL = ERTEL). As to my knowledge these names have its origin in the region of Southern Germany/Bavaria, Wurttemberg, kand Austria. Unquote. My Ertel ancestors are from the village of Neuburg on the Rhine near Karlshrue,
