Hi Cathy,
John and I are 1st cousins. I've heard that ERDLE was the way the French spelled Ertle. Seems that someone on the internet said that--will have to look it up and see if I can come up with the source for Erdle.

Anyhow, my mother was a teacher and many a little child or parent would call my mother, "Mrs. ERDLE." So--you can't go by spelling! Ertel/Ertle/Oertel are some of the spellings used.
