My in-laws are from the Rhine Region and have the surname "Eschbacher."
They say the name, as translated loosely into English, means water crosser.
They have done extensive tracing of their heritage; apparently, relatives from some 27 generations back were seafarers.
In fact, there is a school of thought in European historical studies which credits the discovery of America to the Eschbacher Family.
