Sorry, but I don't have anything in the way of ancestry on Bernhard. Here's what I do have.

Bernhard Esch
Born: Jul 14, 1823 in Engelsheim, Alsace, Germany/France
Surname was spelled in two different ways "Bernhard" in the 1880 census and von Schulenburg's book. In the 1900 census, it was spelled "Bernard." Also, his birthdate is listed as July 1824 in the 1900 census, but von Schulenburg's book gives it as July 1823.
It's possible that Bernhard Esch arrived in New York aboard the ship "New York" on 10/26/1844. (Microfilm #0002302) I have not been able to find the ship's manifest for this vessel, but the passenger index lists a german passenger with the name Bernhard Esch immigrating to Erie Co., Ohio and von Schulenburg's book says he immigrated in 1845.
Appeared in Erie Common Pleas court on October 11, 1846 and was issued a certificate of citizenship on October 12, 1846 (see Journal 4, page190).
The 1850 census shows a Mary Tracy, age 17, born in Ireland, living in a hotel run by Wm E. Deely in Portland Twp, Erie Co., Ohio. The birthdate would be 1837.Also living at the same hotel is a Barnard Esh, a shoemaker from Germany, age 28.
From "Sandusky -- Then and Now"
Page 29:"Note 1. The living and business quarters of John Garrison were located on what is now Water St. behind the old store which was used for so many years by B. Esch as a shoemaker's shop and which was razed a few years ago to make room for a substantial stone building."
Page 145:A member of the Sandusky Schützenverein, founded in 1861...Bernhard Esch.
Page 230-235: "There follows a correct listing of all those who conducted a business in Sandusky in the year 1855 and those marked with an asterisk are the names of those who, or their children, are still engaged even today [1899] in the same business.CITY DIRECTORY OF THE YEAR 1855...Shoemakers...*Esch, Bernh."
In the 1900 census, Bernhard Esch was retired.
