Finally, for the first time since posting this question, I have solved this mystery.

Quaker John Holcombe, of Amwell, Hunterdon County, NJ, maried Elizabeth Woolrich, b.1683 died 1661.

I thewill of John Holcombe, his widow Elizabeth, and his children are mentioned, and many bequests are detailed. In 1747, payments were made, from the estzte of John Holcombe, to many different people, including "Robert Esmey". There is NO mention in this record of distribution of funds from the estate of John Holcombe in 1747, which included a payment to "Robert Esmey", of any marriage of John Holcombe's widow to "Robert Esmey", nor is there any other indication WHATEVER that the two married. By 1742 Elizabeth Woolrich was past 60 years old, and could not have had children by any such marriage, even if it had happened.

So that the assertion by Samuel Willett Comstock, and others (this isnformation being found in LDS records eg the Pedigree Resource File) that Elizabeth Woolrich Holcombe married Robert Esmey and was the mother of twin sons William and Thomas born in 1742, is totally unsupportable by any kind of evidence.

But there was, apparently, a man named Robert Esmey, who lived in NJ at this time.
