It appears that most of the esmays in the U. S. trace their heritage to Thomas Esmay of Dutchess County, New York, and his marriage to Elizabeth Parmentier. Questions have been raised regarding the heritage of Thomas Esmay. According to the Mormon records at, Thomas Ismay was born on 05 SEP 1747 Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, New York. He died 1820 Jerusalem, Albany, New York. His parents were Robert and Margaret Ismay, both of England. The Mormon records regarding Thomas Esmay provide that he was born 05 SEP 1742, Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, New York. They also provide that he died 1820, Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, New York. Although there are some discrepancies, it appears that Thomas Esmay was really Thomas Ismay and that the spelling variation from Ismay to Esmay started with Thomas. I am also posting this message on the Ismay forum. A considerable amount of research regarding the Ismay surname is available through the Ismay forum.
