Informations about Surname
Posted by: Carlos Miguel Espada de Jesus (ID *****7197) Date: June 06, 2008 at 05:50:31

After doing an extensive search....
I've come up to the conclusion that the surname Espada, comes from Portugal and Spain.
Therefore there are 2 families with that surname, the Espadas from Portugal, living in Algarve and Alentejo regions originally; and the Espadas from Spain, from Galiza originally( Then extended to North Portugal and former spanish colonies,peru,mexico,chile,etc...)

The origins are uncertain, but heres a list of the suspect origins:

1- From the name Espata(Roman), of the first century, that mens Sword or person that makes swords

2- Nickname, because Espada means Sword, it also suspects that someone, like a blacksmith could had that nickname;or a fisherman for the fishing of the (Largehead hairtail)Peixe-Espada in portuguese or (Swordfish)Espadarte

3-the most certain...
Descendents of the Order of Santiago, the Sntiago Knights

Hope that was helpfull
