There is a little town (pop<100) outside of Munich called Essing. It has been inhabited since the bronze age. People from the town are called Essinger. I'm fairly sure the name originated there. A good percentage of german essingers seem to be jewish as the name appears frequently in german/jewish memorials. In the US the vast majority of Essingers (I use the term vast loosely -- I think there are around 45 of them) live in Ohio and, I think, are related to three Essingers who came through Ellis Island in the 1840s. My family seems to have come here later. My grandfather's name was Elijah Essinger and his parents were born in germany but I don't know their names.
