Christine Gary, wife of the late William W. "Dude" Gary, and a resident of San Marcos, Texas, for over 60 years, passed away at Redwood Springs retirement home in San Marcos on Sunday morning, October 4, 1998. She was 93 years old.
Christine was born Margaret Christine Esslinger on March 10, 1905, in Gurley, Alabama, one of seven children born to Andrew Watkins Esslinger and Emma Green Esslinger. Christine graduated from Cameron High School, Cameron, Texas, in 1922. She attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos, where she received her Teachers Certificate in January, 1928. In September,
1928, she married William W. "Dude" Gary, whose family has resided in San Marcos since 1868.
Christine is survived by her three sons, J.W. Gary, of Corpus Christi, and wife, Dayle, Andrew Gary, of San Marcos, and wife, Carol, and Bill Gary, of Karnes City, and wife, Ann; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Geraldine Hester Gary (surviving wife of Otis Gary); her sister-in law, Rudolph Gary Barlow (surviving wife of Tom Barlow); and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, William W. "Dude" Gary, who died in December of 1965, Christine was preceded in death by her brothers, Andrew Esslinger, Francis Esslinger, Robert Esslinger, Erle Esslinger and Roy Esslinger; her sister, Cornelia Weatherby; her brothers-in-law, Earl Gary and wife, Julia Gary, Otis Gary, Ward Gary, Tom Barlow; and her sisters-in-law, Polly Gary Brown and Bessie Gary Butler and husband, Mann Butler.
Serving as pallbearers are her grandsons, Jim Gary, of Lake Jackson, Texas, Bill Gary, of San Antonio, Texas, Glenn Gary, of Ft. Worth, Texas, John Gary, of San Marcos, Texas, and Robert Gary, of Dallas, Texas.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 1998, from 6:00 to
7:30 p.m. at Pennington Funeral Home, San Marcos, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 1998, at 2:00 p.m.
at Pennington Funeral Home. Interment will follow at San Marcos City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, San Marcos, Texas.
