The Lake Peipus between Estonia and Russia is called Tschudskoje ozero in Russian. Some of the nations in an area populated by the Finno-Ugrians were referred to as Tschuds (Chuds) by the Slavonic people in the later Middle Ages. Mostly they are believed to be Estonians and some smaller people (Votyaks, Karelians etc). According to some linguists the word comes from old Finno-Ugrish word 'suue, suude' which means a chock (keel, wedge).
