Soldat

In the personaalraamatud for Maholm Kirchspiele (now Viru-Nigula, Lääne-Virumaa) as viewed on LDS microfilms, a number of the men in my family have something like "Soldat 1845" written against their names. The pastor at the time (1815-63), Gustav Hasselblatt, wrote mainly in German (of course) but also used some Latin and also Estonian (at least 'l' or 'lesk' for widows).

Any idea what he means by "Soldat"? Is he talking about the Tsarist authorities conscripting men for their military?

Aitäh for any assistance!
Ann
