I am not sure about Canada, but I have read many stories about Ellis Island passengers, whose names were changed by the officials, because they could not read or pronounce it. Or the persons themselves changed their name to avoid further complications with their names. There are possibly some immigration and naval records in Canada. Thouse would be the place to start, I guess. I have seen some British Naval records (held in Canada) that state the place of origin of Estonians (not only the country, but the city also).
