I am not related to this person; Poughkeepsie Journal Thursday, 14 October 2004 Poughkeepsie, NY Anna VOOLAINE Anna Voolaine Anna Voolaine, 100, died on Monday, Oct. 11, 2004 at Fishkill Health Center, where she had resided for almost three years. She formerly resided in the City of Poughkeepsie. Born on March 13, 1904 in Kaagjarve, Valga, Estonia, Anna was the daughter of the late Karoline and Peter Laats. She was married to Reio Voolaine, who predeceased her. Along with her mother and her husband, Anna arrived in the United States in 1949 and became a citizen in 1955. She was proud of her citizenship and served on the National Advisory Board for the American Security Council. Anna was fluent in several languages and submitted translations of many daily foreign papers to national government officials. Her interest in politics and a free society led her to tell everyone she met that "the United States is the last fortress of true freedom." Anna studied art at the Palaz in Tartu, Estonia. An accomplished artist, she exhibited her works locally and in New York City. She also painted many portraits for local residents. Until a few years ago, she frequently traveled to New York City by train to attend meetings of the Estonian Seniors group at the Estonian House. She wrote and delivered many speeches about patriotism to her colleagues. Anna was a member of the Estonian Lutheran Church and the Mid-Hudson Estonian Association. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at the William G. Miller and Sons Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie with the Rev. Valdeko Kangro officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
