Dear Fred -- it took a long time for me to check your answer against a page containing a "Reirut" entry. When I did, it still looked like "Reirut". Then I checked a chart of Gothic handwriting and found that the handwritten small "c" certainly can look like an "i". Thank you once again for being spot on! The only question left now is why is the entry "Reirut/recrut" in some places and "Soldat" in others? I suspect that when I go back to the copies of the records, I will find that one pastor used one term and another pastor used the other. There certainly were a lot of men "recruited" into the Tsar's army. The whole topic warrants further research along the lines of reading about the conflicts in which Russia was involved in the 19th century. The invasion by Napoleon and the war in the Crimea spring to mind. Thank you, Ann Notify Administrator about this message?
