The last name Puss was given to 43 unrelated families in Estonia in 1820s and 1830s when last names were given to peasants. It has several meanings in the Estonian language. My family got its last name from a farm name. As there are many persons with the last name Puss in the USA during the 19th century, it is not very likely that they all came from Estonia. The word has also meanings in other languages (in Swedish it means a kiss :)).
