Sep/Sepp means "blacksmith" so, your first question: Blacksmith Niggola's (son)Jurri's son Maddi. The childs name is Maddi, - father Jurri and grandfather Niggola who happened to be a blacksmith. They used the grandfathers name first, then the father and then the name of the child. In the 1740's they did not have surnames. They were serfs and occupations were used as a title, but in the middle of 1800's surnames were given and it would be natural that this family would take Sepp. At a certain point of time ( I can't remember when)they seem to have dropped the grandfarthers name in this form. Your second question: "p" = son, "t" = daughter, "n" = wife "Seppa Niggola n. Marri"- Blacksmith Niggola's wife Marri. Is this a death notice or is it as one of the godparents? regards Notify Administrator about this message?
