Peasant ancestors named by landlords?!
Posted by: Andrea Date: January 01, 2001 at 00:18:30

I'm in the somewhat enviable position of having discovered the origins of my VILU ancestors' name. That is the name apparently given to my ggg-grandfather Toomas Vilu by his Baltic-German landlord.

Any ideas on how to figure out who owned Toomas and/or what his family name would have been at birth and/or anything else about him? Imagine, you finally get to the "root" of a name, but then there is nothing????

The VILU story is that:

Toomas was born c1800 to a peasant family in Harku Village, about 5 km from Tallinn. One day, age unknown but thought to be in his teens, Toomas was taken to Hiiumaa where he was traded for a hunting dog. Toomas' new landlord took a liking to Toomas and decided he needed a surname. He was named VILU, the Estonian word for "cool" because (so the story goes) either the trade had taken place on a cool day or because the naming occurred on a cool day.

Any suggestions would be most welcome and appreciated!

Thanks,
Andrea
