Eian,
My great great great granddad is Daniel Rogers b. 1811 in Shalford Surrey he married Beaufoy rogers – I’m hoping it is the same one that you have in your tree.
I have recently discovered that he may have been the last person to work on the Wey and Arun Canal as someone kindly passed on information from Paul Vine's "London's Lost Route to the Sea" stating that …
After 1872 only one labourer, who lived in a small cottage on Run Common, remained on the pay-roll of the bankrupt canal Company. Rogers' task was primarily to keep the towpath clear by cutting hay and trimming hedges, the fruits of his labour being sold to increase the canal's meagre revenue by a few shillings.
I have Daniel and Beaufoy rogers listed in the 1861 and 1871 censuses as a labourer on the wey and arun canal (aged 50 and 60 respectively) and in the 1881 Census (aged 70) he was lived at Run Common and was listed as an "Ml Nav Serv Canal Keeper"
So hopefully it is him, I am awaiting confirmation from the wey and arun canal trust.
If you have any further information on Daniel Rogers or his family my mum and I would greatly appreciate it
Regards
