Hello Hans-Georg.
My name is Sylvio Etling and I come from Ponitz in Thuringia/ Germany. I've found this
forum by accident and I was surprised that there are so many people that bear the name Etling. I don't know which of your possibilities where the name came from is right but my grandfather Rudolf Etling told me that the name probably came from Elsaß/ Lothringen (a land that belonged to Germany later to France). That's why the name here is pronounced french-style (like Ettling).
I don't know if this story is true but there must be a lot of Etlings in France.
The name Etling in the area of Altenburg/ Thuringia exist as I know since 1815.(Michael Etling) This is prooved by a family tree that was created by my cousin.
A branch of the Etling - family emigrated to the United States. And like many emigrants there first step into the new world was New York. This I found out in 1999 during a New
York travel. On Ellis Island there were lots
of boards with the names of thousands of emigrants. The name of the Etlings family among them. But there were no dates or numbers of family members that's why I don't
know the year of the emigration.
I'm looking forward to have a reply.
