Dear Ruth

Joshua Eva was my great great grandfather and I am named after him! We have a portrait of him. He had a large handlebar moustache. He was a short man with a very hard punch! Whilst he lived with John North (not Norton) from the age of 5 years, who was a butcher and Joshua became his apprentice, later in his life he became an antiques dealer. He was very succesful and became quite rich. At one time he owned several properties in Lemon Street, Truro, Cornwall, which is still a prominent street, just off the high street. I researched the family history a little using the Ancestry website a couple of years ago but would like to find out more. Much of what I know about Joshua is from stories my father has told me. I understand Joshua was friends with the mayor of Truro. Apparently Joshua was an animal lover. One day he saw a man whipping a horse in the street. He told him to stop. The man was much larger than Joshua and refused to stop, telling Joshua to go away. Joshua punched him. Unfortunately the man fell to the ground, banging his head on the road. He died as a result of his injury. Joshua was tried for his murder. Luckily for him, the judge was the mayor of Truro, his friend and he was acquitted! Joshua was well loved. When he died his wife, Ellen (who my father thought was called "Helen" but I agree from the records she was Ellen) was devastated. She said "he cannot be dead. Not he" and threw herself into the open grave! Apparently Joshua had been quite unfaithful during his marriage to Ellen but she loved him anyway. He also had a reputation for getting into fights. The legend goes that he and the mayor of Truro would go to London for days at a time, getting into bar fights and then return to truro with injuries to show for it!

Anyway, all of that is what has been passed down through the generations so who knows how accurate it is! I am very proud to be named after such a character. Joshua's son was Edgar. His son was Richard. His son was Francis James Eva, who is my father.

I would love to find out more. Please do drop me an email and perhaps we can exchange some information. I understand the Eva family line goes back a long way in Cornwall. Helston area in particular.
