Have you seen the 1880 and 1870 census listings?
In 1880, in Spring Creek, Madison Co, NC there's Bud Evans, age 17, born in NC, working as a hired hand and living in the household of Martin White.
In 1870 there is only one Evans family in Madison Co and they are also in Spring Creek:
EVANS, Daniel age 73 b. SC
" Jane age 72 b. NC
MARLEN or poss MARLOR, Bud age 6 b. NC
" Jane age 5
In 1860, same location, Daniel EVINS gives his age as 65, Jane's age is 61 and there is a younger Daniel living with them, age 16.
