As far as we know, Nimrod Evans was no relation at all to John, whom we believe to be the son of Gerard Evans. He was the son of John Evans, Sr. of Monongalia County, who had come from Fairfax County, Virginia when the Edward Evans family was still in Maryland. John Evans was colonel of the county militia and some time clerk of the county court, a position afterward filled by his son, Nimrod Evans.
In other words, Nimrod Evans was probably the clerk of the county court when John Evans, son of Gerard, took out his marriage bond to Elizabeth Windsor. Or perhaps his father or one of his brothers was the clerk that year and Nimrod happened to be present to act as witness. If he signed with the letters "CMC" then it was in his official capacity as Clerk of the Monongalia County Court. I don't have the bond so I can't see his signature.
More useful might be the name of the surety for the bond. Typically the father or a brother of the groom would stand as surety, although it could be a close friend or even a member of the bride's family. Could you possibly transcribe the bond if you have a copy?
