Michael Welker was born about 1731 in Montgomery Co PA and died about 1799 in Westmoreland Co PA. He was first married to Anna Reed, and second married to an Elizabeth whose last name no one knows. I am starting to think she was an Evans. On the mail-list for Westmoreland Co PA I found a very interesting message (copied below). It has a transcription of a newspaper item about an 1893 reunion of descendants of Walter Evans. Several of the names mentioned are of interest to me: R K Hissem: This is Reuben Kintigh Hissem b 1842 PA. His parents were Samuel Hissem + Elizabeth Kintigh; Samuel's parents were Abner Hissem + Mary Barbara Welker. Mary was a daughter of Michael + Elizabeth. Michael Welker: "Michael" was a common name among the Welkers, but I think this one is Michael R Welker b 1839 Stark Co OH. His father was William, whose father was Michael Jr, whose parents were Michael + Elizabeth. But there was another Michael Welker living in Westmoreland Co at the time of the reunion. He is Michael b 1804 PA, son of Jacob Welker, who was a son of Michael 1731 and his first wife Anna Reid. This other Michael would have been 88 at the time of the reunion, so I think the younger Michael is more likely to be the one voted vice-president. Enos Ruff: This is Enos Silas Ruff b 1838 PA. His parents were Jonas Ruff + Ruth Hissem. Ruth's parents were Abner Hissem + Mary Barbara Welker, mentioned above. The only way I can see for these three men to be descendants of Walter Evans would be if Michael Welker's wife was Walter's daughter. Note that some of the Evans descendants are from Stark Co OH. This interests me because my line is from Michael + Elizabeth's son Henry, who moved to Stark Co. On the 1790 census Michael Welker is in Montgomery Co PA. Also in Montgomery Co is a Walter Evans. Michael died before the 1800 census, but Elizabeth is in Westmoreland Co. There is a Walter Evans in Montgomery Co, and another in Westmoreland Co. The one in Westmoreland is 26-45, and the other is over 45. It could be a coincidence, or Walter could have had a son Walter Jr. I tried to look up some of the other names listed in the article, hoping to find some reference to a Walter Evans. Here is what I found: Jacob Coughenour: I think this is Jacob Couchenour b c1863 PA. His parents were Samuel Couchenour + Jane (unknown). I haven't found his ancestry, but I ran across this web page: http://www.lva.virginia.gov/findaid/33200.htm It describes genealogical information on the Gochenour and Evans families of VA and Montgomery Co PA. W H Evans: This is William H Evans b 1834 PA. He had a son named Walter. There was a William Evans in Montgomery Co on the 1850 census, son of Amos. But according to RootsWeb entries Amos was son of Mordecai Jr, whose grandfather was an immigrant, so he wouldn't fit in with Walter's family. There are several other William Evanses of the appropriate age in PA on the 1850 census who also could be him. James W Evans of Stark Co: This is James Evans b c1852 OH, son of Henry b c1812 PA + Hannah (unknown). Does anyone know anything about the Walter Evans whose descendants are described below? In particular, did he have a daughter Elizabeth? Here is the message from the Westmoreland Co maillist: ====================================================== From: Rich Bentley <rbentley@inreach.com> Date: Sun, 30 Mar 2003 18:34:21 -0800 Transribed from an original (but crumbling & falling apart) copy of the Tribune in my possession: (Walter was my 3G-Grandfather) ___________________________________ >From page 1 of the Greensburg Daily Tribune Monday Evening, October 9, 1893 THE EVANS REUNION. An Interesting Gathering at the W. H. Evans Residence. Correspondence of The Tribune. Hempfield Twp., Oct. 9. - According to previous arrangements the descendants of Walter Evans gathered at the residence of W. H. Evans, where the meeting was called to order at 11 o'clock a. m., Thursday, October 5th, 1893, by electing R. K. Hissem, president, and Michael Welker, Jacob Coughenour, John Evans of Madison, Pa., Samuel Ebbert, Wilson Shields, Enos Ruff, G. C. Winnings, Joshua Evans, and Jesse Giffen, vice presidents; James V. Evans of New Stanton, secretary. Prayer by Rev. S. Douglas. Song of welcome followed by an address of welcome by James V. Evans of New Stanton, Pa., and responded to in a fitting manner by James W. Evans of Pierce, Stark county, Ohio, and Rev. S. S. Hough of Madison, Pa. At this time it was announced that dinner was ready, when a recess was taken for dinner to which all did justice, and greeted their friends. After a reasonable time was given for noon recess, the happy throng, whose hearts beat in unison, was again called together and Jno. L. Davidson of Greensburg, Pa., gave the family history which gave as a total of living descendants, three hundred and five. Rev. Zuber of Greensburg, gave a spicy address, also Rev. Douglas and Rev. Woodward. Solo by M. M. Byers. Short talks were given by Messrs. W. S. King, Jno. L. Davidson, and W. H. Evans. A hearty vote of thanks was tendered W. H. Evans for hospitalities. A committee of four was named to see to having another reunion in about two years, consisting of James W. Evans of Pierce, Stark county, Ohio, James V. Evans, Wm. H. Evans of New Stanton, Pa., Charlie Evans of Madison, Pa. One noticeable fact was that there were only two old bachelors among the entire descendants and both were present. Total number present, 159, and this day will fall o'er all present, as the seasons come and go, and cause them to cherish the love grown cold with care. County papers please copy. ====================================================== Ken Notify Administrator about this message?
