Hmmm, it's a pity Reuben was born just before the advent (1837) of centralized civil registration in England. You might check for a naturalization petition (US Natl. Archives) in which he might well give the town or parish in Kent of his birth (for pre-1837 VRs, "Kent" isn't specific enough). You might check parishes around Hever, since there seems to be a family legend connected with that area. You might wish to check the LDS International Genealogical Index, bearing in mind that it should be used for clues, not for proof. There are also a number of good books on English genealogy on the market, many of which make very good reading.
