The great-granddaughter of John and Catherine Evers Leonard, Josephine McNamara Newton, told me about this. She passed away in 1998. One of her sisters had actually gone to St. Thomas and found the location of the old plantation. She said that John went to Delaware, died without a will, and the plantation reverted to the government after 90 years. She said a Biddle family, who owned a large grocery chain in the East, now owned the place. I have really been frustrated in finding much about St. Thomas. I have read all the films on file at Salt Lake and have written letters to the university there. I guess they have been hit by so many hurricanes through the years that there just isn't much surviving.
