John, Julius & Timothy Ewen - immigrants

I'm looking for info on my G8 Grandparents, John Ewen and Catherine Campbell.

Either Catherine or her parents are said in our family history to have come over with Wm Penn in 1782. This doesn't make a whole lot of sense, as John and Catherine's son, Julius Ewen, married (Sarah Middleton) in 1752, and Catherine's grandson, Timothy Ewen, was born in 1740 (or 1767, records vary), in Fayette Co, PA.

My branch of the family says that Timothy Ewen was our Immigrant Ancestor, and that his father, Julius (or Julias) Ewen, was "an English Lord - Never came to America."

But I've now found another branch of the family that has John Ewen (and Catherine Campbell?) in NJ in 1665, a son, Julius, with a house built in 1730, and Timothy being born in this country - in either 1740 or around 1767. Other than a few discrepancies in dates and lore, they seem to be the same family as mine.

I've recently read in my GG Aunt Luella Moore Irvin's journals that sometimes years of birth were changed in the records to keep sons out of wars. This could account for some of the discrepancies, but not all.

I'm trying to trace who were immigrant Ancestors, so I can find out where in Scotland (or England, or wherever) to take up that half of the search. So far all I know is the usual stuff about Argyll, Loch Fyne and the Ulster connections - nothing specific about my particular line.

Eager for any input,

kathryn price
