So lovely to hear from you, Victoria. My cousin is going to go bananas when she hears about this (she's not online).

It's so exciting to hear about Charles's musical sister. I was always told that Charles had sung at St. John's in Washington but I had no idea anyone else in the family was musical.

Oh dear, I feel such an idiot not having any of the notes here; all I can do is tell you what I remember.

Charles Cary Ewer married Mary Ellen Schutter in the 1870s. Mary Ellen's Father was a Prussian 'fresco painter' called Hubert Schutter. According to family memories (no idea how accurate any of those may be) he did some work in the Capitol. Obviously, I would love to see his work...but the only definite mention of his name on the internet was at the Ford Theatre where he was one of two fresco painters. [I have a feeling one ancestor of mine found a museum to accept a piece of cloth cut from the Theatre's curtain after President Lincoln was shot.] Hubert Schutter's wife was Esther Margaret McConnell (our link with the Weiser/Muhlenburg family in Pennsylvania).

Mary Ellen Schutter Ewer was widowed in the 1870s, when my grandmother was 2 or 3. They went back to live with her parents. She later married a very nice man (who later came to the family's rescue at a really crucial time) called Frank E. Johnson. He began work as a boy clerk and ended up as a 'Special Agent' for the Treasury Department, stationed in California.

I have a feeling that the name Brailey is also in the Family Bible we have.

If you e-mail me I could send you a photo of Charles Cary Ewer. Otherwise I will get back in touch when I'm reunited with the family records.

- Wendy
