We do not know when Benjamin French died. In 1887 his wife, Philinda (Ewer) French applied for the pension of her son, Evi, who had died about a year after the Civil war. The pension documents testify that Benjamin was alcoholic, abusive and neglectful of his family. He lost all of their property because of his drinking. His wife, Philinda did not live with him after about 1887. He then disappears.
A search of the Vital records from year 1887 to 1899 found
no death record in MI for Benjamin. There is a family story that Benjamin disappeared after he left home to look for work, but the pension documents seem to tell another story.
I would love to hear more about Andrew. The original family record says he died as young man, but I have found him with the family in 1870 census and with wife, Sarah and two children on the 1880 census Andrew is Uncle to my Grandmother, Bertha French. He was brother to my gr-grandfather, Edward French.

Margaret
