I too am researching my branch of the Exelby family which came from Yorkshire. The earliest confirmed descendant I have is John Exelby (b. Mar 15, 1797 d. Mar 7, 1862). He was married to Naomi Hutchinson in 1827 in Bugthorpe. I have been told that his parents might have been (still working on confirmation) William Exelby and Esther Wilson who were married in 1794 in Thorganby, Yorkshire.
I'm wondering if your Edward is possible a brother (or other relation) to my John.
John & Naomi emmigrated to Canada about 1830 with their children (who were born in Bugthorpe, the rest being born in Canada).
Have you tried searching the Church of Latter Day Saints web-site? I was able to find John & Naomi marriage record, Naomi's birth/christening record and William and Esther's marriage record ( I have also found other ancestors listed from other branches of my family tree). Unfortunaly I couldn't find John's birth record listed (at least not with the date that I have been given). You can find it at
I know this hasn't been much help, but if you should find a connection between the two families please let me know.
