The Derbyshire and Wiltshire EYREs share the same coat of arms, crest and motto. But no one has ever been able to discover the link between the two branches. There is a very astute lady in England who is working on a theory that a Le Blount became an EYRE and that the name change came about as the result of proving claim to land and the term "le heyr" indicating the one to inherit. That's a very abbreviated form of an interesting and somewhat well supported theory. She's provided some good documentation but more remains to be done and more documentation needed. Dan EYRE has presented her theory on his webpage at

It is not as clearly written and presented as the lady herself has presented to me and to a few others but you can get the gist of her reasoning.
