This is to both Everett Erikson and Nellie Catchings. My grandmother, Mattie Lou Fabel, was born in Montgomery, Al in 1895. Her parents were Leopold Phillip Fable, born 1848, and Fannie Purifoy, born 1861. Leopold and Fannie were married in 1888. This was his second marriage. I do not know his first wife's surname, but they had at least 2 sons,Jacob J. and George P. Fabel. He had at least 7 children with Fannie: Pearson C., John W., Mary L., Mattie L. (my grandmother), Pauline, Annie Belle, and Jeanette. Leopold's father, Jacob Fable was born in 1817 in Bavaria. His wife Mary Eisert was born in 1826 in Baden, Germany. Jacob and Mary were married in Montgomery County, AL by Robert H. Jackson, Justice of the Peace, on May 13, 1844. I have a photocopy of tbe document signed by Mr. Jackson.

According to the Montgomery County 1860 census,Mary (age 34) and Jacob (age 43) had sons George P.,15, Leopold-my great-grandfather, 13, and Hermond, 11. Two daughters were listed, Katharine and Mary, both age 8.

My father's cousin who had written all this down from the 1860 census, also wrote down the following information. In the 1860 Montgomery County census, there was a Labold Fable, age 50, also born in Germany. The following people were living with him: Katherine age 22, Caroline, age 18, Daniel, age 15, and William, age 12. This sounds like your family, Nellie. I do not know why my father's cousin wrote this family down, unless, Labold and Jacob were brothers. Perhaps, my greatgrandfather Leopold, was named after Labold(Leopold?).

The 1900 census shows my great-grandfather Leopold and his family living on Carter Hill Road in Montgomery, and this is correct, as that is where my grandmother grew up. By the 1900 census, the name was no longer spelled Fable, but had been changed to Fabel. My grandmother told me that it was originally spelled Fable, because that was the French spelling of the name and that the family had lived in France before moving to Germany. This may just be a family legend. I have no proof of that.

This is really all the information that I have about the Fabel family. I hope you find it helpful or interesting. If anyone has any additional information, I would appreciate it!
