About William Elder (this is the only biographical material I could locate)
ID: I0094
Name: William ELDER
Sex: M
Birth: 1707 in Prince Georges County, MD. Good Will
Death: 11 APR 1775
Note: William Elder was successful in his move to Frederick County. He named the mountain ST. MARY'S MOUNT where later Mt. St. Mary's College would begin. After the death of his first wife Ann, he married the daughter of his neighbor Arnold Livers. She was named Jacoba Clementina after James, the Old Pretender to the English throne, and his wife Clementina. This marriage added 7 more children to the 5 already in the Elder household. Guy Elder, a son of William, was an active orator in the pre-revolution days and on one cool damp evening as William was listening to his son talk at a barn on Tom's Creek, the elderly man caught pneumonis and died a few days later on April 11, 1775.. Jacoba lived to be 90 years old and in the 1790 census was listed as head of the household with one son and six slaves. Most of the land that Mt. St. Mary's is now using for the College and Seminary was deeded (donated or sold to) by the Elder Family. Ogles Good Will and Elders Resurvey were two portions of land now with the college. The original Elder Cemetary is still sitting in the middle of college land.

The Relationship Finder Tool is as accurate as the data we pull from OneWorldTree. The quality of each relationship shown is measured by stars (where 5 stars shows high probability of an accurate relationship).
Keep in mind--The possible relationship information we show is only as accurate as the member-contributed family tree information found in OneWorldTree. We are unable to verify whether these results are in fact accurate. Of course, that's part of the fun of family history--digging into the research.

„hDeath: 1714 in Maryland
„hNote:
Rev. Herman Mattingly reported in "Mattingly Family in Early America" that Judith and Elizabeth were born in the 1690's. Judith was married to her first husband by 1699. Hence, her birth date must be earlier. She and Elizabeth are likely children of their father's first (possible) marriage to Mary "Suttle" (maiden name unknown). The will of John Suttle, written on 4-14-1680 names his wife as Executrix. When the will was executed on 10-7-1681, it included payment to Mary Mattingly, Executrix, wife of Thomas Mattingly. This Mary, however, could have been a daughter of John and not his ex-wife. This marriage is still under investigation.
The parents of Thomas were Thomas, I and Elizabeth. His siblings were, Judith, Elizabeth, and Cezar.

„hNote:
It is generally believed by many researchers that all children were by Mary Hayden, daughter of George Hayden and Charity Morgan however, there is sufficient evidence found by Judith Burger and Linda Davies Reno to demonstrate that was not the case. I have included some of that evidence below. Buried at St. Charles Church Cemetery. Some records published by Rev. J. F. Mattingly, state he had a daughter named Nancy who became a Nun with Sister's of Loretto. Leonard names his second wife as Dorothy. It is assumed that a nickname was Dolly as many sources refer to her as such.
8/7/1755: Admin. accts. of George Hayden, SMC.
Sureties: Robert Thompson, Clement Hayden. Received from: Vincent Taylor, Richard Hayden, Sebastian Thompson, James Howard. Payments to: Meverill Lock, James Mills, Philip Barton Key, William Jordan, A. Barnes, Philip Key, James Thompson, John Jordan. Distribution to: Accountant, 1/3. Residue to (orphans): William Hayden (age 13); Basil Hayden (age 12); Charles Hayden (age 8); George Hayden (age 7); Mary Hayden (age 6); Francis Hayden (age 4). Admx.: Charity Morgan, wife of William Morgan. (Admin. accts. of the Prerogative Court of Maryland, Libers, 37-45, 1754-1760 by V. L. Skinner, Jr.). NOTE: As is seen above, the daughter of George Hayden was too young to have been the mother of Leonard's eldest children.
Leonard and his family were already in Kentucky when the below will of James Aprice was registered but this is evidence that Leonard's first wife was Margaret:
The will of James Aprice wherein he names Margaret as the wife of Leonard Mattingly is written in Feb. of 1788 and the codicil where in he revokes the bequest to Leonard and Margaret's daughters in April of 1789. He likely revoked his first will because the daughters of Leonard went to Kentucky with their father and were not going to return.

She is to also have the labor of all of my negroes during her life and the rest of my personal estate forever.
Nephew: Benedict Aprice, the remainder of my real estate. He is to also receive my negroes at the death of my wife. To Margaret Mattingly and Sarah Mattingly, daughters of Leonard and Margaret Mattingly, one negro of the value of 30 pounds current money to be paid to them after the death of my wife. Executor(s): Wife, Mary Aprice, and nephew, Benedict Aprice. Witnesses: Hanson Briscoe, James Melton, Mary Ann Melton.

One source gives marriage date as 10-31-1801. Some sources say that John married a Peggy Montgomery in 1797 but this cannot be as his wife Mary, outlived him. The 1820 census of Washington County, Kentucky finds John over age 45 with two sons over 10 but under 16, one son 16 to 18, and one son 16 but under 26. Females in the home were one under age 10, one 16 to 26, and his wife over 45.

„hNote:
Moved to Breckinridge County sometime after his marriage but evidence shows he remained there only a short time and moved to Washington County. On the census of 1850, he is again in Marion County. Reportedly had 8 children but ten have been identified by various researchers and are verifiable. The census records of 1850 and 1860 suggest he was born in 1797, as does a grave discovered by P. Burch in Mount Merino Cemetery near Irvington, which suggest he was born on 5-7-1797 and died 8-23-1862. It isn't known for certain that this is the grave of John, Jr. but in all likelihood it is and until we know for sure, I am using the dates herein. Descendants, through LDS, give the date 6-16-1795 but do not state where this date came from. Birth dates of various children given through the LDS do not match with the suggested dates of the census. The 1840 Marion County census shows him with only two sons who fit the ages of Benedict and Francis so if James ever existed then he must have died young. The census shows 6 daughters: Two between the ages of 10 and 15 (these would be Magdelena and Mary Ann); two age 5 to 10 (Margaret and Susan) and two girls under five (Mahala, and Eliza).
Considerable information and confirmation from P. Burch, descendant.

„hNote: May have been born in Meade County, Kentucky per descendants. Information on John and his descendants is courtesy of and the exclusive research of Audrey "Frakes" Perkins. with some additional data from myself. 1870 finds the couple in Caseville with two children. The couple is found on the 1880 census of Caseville, Meade County with six children at the time. From Danny and Dolores Bohn: Baptized John Gaulbert Mattingly, 10-22-1842, by Rev. Louis Nicholas Petit at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Birth date, 7-12-1842. Sponsor, Ann Boarman. Parents, John & Susan Mattingly. The on-line Kentucky birth records show the birth of a son named Jacob H. on 7-7-1874 but census records do not show such a child and they had a son named Paul Elmer born 3-5-1874 and this conflicts with a children being born just four months later.

Name: Matilda Ellen HARDESTY Birth: 3 APR 1851 in Kentucky Death: 9 JUN 1928 in Bloomington, Illinois Burial: St. Mary Magdalen Cemetery, Meade County, Kentucky Note:
Matilda was a grand-daughter of Nancy Budges whose second husband had been Basil Mattingly, born about 1795.
Her obituary appeared in the Breckinridge County Herald, 1928 and was sent to me by Audrey Perkins.
"Mrs. Matilda Ellen Mattingly, 77 tears old, resident of Bloomington, Ill., for the past two years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Frakes, from a complications of diseases. Mrs. Mattingly was born in Payneville, Ky., April 03, 1851, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Hardesty. She spent the most of her life in the community in which she was born. She was married in 1866 to John G. Mattingly, who preceded her in death 14 years ago. She was the mother of nine children, sixty grandchildren, and 30 great grandchildren. She was a member of the Catholic Church. The funeral was conducted from St. Patrick's Church at Payneville where the body was brought for burial. Mrs. Mattingly was well known throughout the community for her good works and trusted and loved by all in daily contact with her. She recently suffered a very severe attack of influenza and heart attack but seemly had fully recovered. She was found by her daughter with whom she lived, in an unconscious state and without her ever regaining consciousness passed away two days afterward. The children who survive are, Amos Mattingly, Webster, Ky., Mrs. S. E. Wilson, Mrs. James Arnold and Paul Mattingly of Louisville, Ky., Mrs. John Fackler and Henry Mattingly of Payneville, Ky., and Mrs. Gus Whelan of Flaherty, Ky., one brother, Sam Hardesty, and one sister, Mrs. Lyda Payne also survive."
Note from Audrey: "I think that should be St. Mary Magdalen, Payneville, Kentucky."
