My data comes from a genealogist my grandfather Sir David had working for him in Scotland. She had some trouble as the Fairbairns were members of the Free Church of Scotland which kept seperate records.
I will dig up the records from Mums container again and post what they say.
My grandfather used to admire his great grandfather Steve greatly. Sir David also rowed for Cambridge and always spoke of Steve's rowing mastery.
It was said that wherever the Fairbairns had land in Australia, large dams were dug to accomodate their rowing.
You might also be interested to know that last month I went to Capella, Queensland with my aunt Rosie to give a speech about the Fairbairn family. In 1901 the colonies of Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania were federated into Australia. I gave my speech from the "Peak Downs" homested that has been moved into the Capella pioneer villiage and restored. In was built in 1869 by George Fairbairn and it was the house that Sir George, Dr. James, Charles, Tom, Steve, Jessie and Fred were raised.
After Virginia Fairbairn, nee Armytage was sent to a mental hospital in England, George became quite a lady's man. He encouraged the children to visit their mother when they were in England. He died on 19th July 1895 at the Queenscliff Hotel, Geelong, Victoria whilst having a dirty night out!
I will let you know when I get my e-mail working again so I can send you pictures of the "Peak Downs"homested if you like.
