Expansion on the Previous Information I posted (James Fairbairn & My family History) . As my side of the family is very unoriginal with names I shall put a number next to each James Fairbairn to indicate the order. Starting with the furthest back:

James Fairbairn (1) was married to Elizabeth Laidlow. No idea when they were born or where they married. As far as we know they just had the one son, James (2). Both were dead by the time of his marriage (1870). He was brought up by eldery Aunts in Kelso, Scotland. I do not yet know their names.

James Fairbairn (2) was born in 1850. Married Christina Sadler (1851 to 1890's in Sunderland we think) in Kelso in 1870. It would seem she was 8 months pregnant at the time! On her deah in the 1890's he married her sister, Mary Sadler, and when she died he married for a 3rd time, but we have no idea to whom. He died 14th Nov 1928 at a hospital in Northallerton, but we do not know where he is buried, but we suspect Knayton, North Yorkshire.

James (2) & Christine had two children. James W(illiam? 3) in 1870, and John W in 1875. John died at sea off Sunderland aged 21 in 1896.

James W (3) married Harriet Douglass in 1897. Lived in Sunderland most of their lives. He died, in Bradford in 1937. She died, also in Bradford, in 1943.

They had two sons, James Douglass (4)in 1902. He married Una Hampshire in the 1920s. They lived in Bradford all of his life. He died in 1981. She is still alive and is currently 104! They had no children.

The second son of James (3) and Harriet, was my grandfather, John William. He was born in 1903 in London. Married Margaret Land in the 1930's and they lived all their married lives in Rugby, Warwickshire. They had two daughters, Audrey (married Nigel Copestake and have two children, Tim & Rosie) and Margaret, known as Peggy (married James Lightfoot, and have 3 children, Catherine, Alistair & Howard), and one son, James Neil (5) my father. John died in 1992, Margaret in 1983)

James Neil (5) married Kiera Watson in 1970. I, James Edward (6) was born in 1971 in Amersham, and Anne Margaret was born in 1978 in High Wycombe. They currently live near Aylesbury in Bucks.

I married Stephanie Rea in 1994, and we have 3 children, James David (7) in 1996, Connor Jacob in 1998, and Caitlin Louise in 1999. We currently live in Harefield, Middlesex, but are moving to Adelaide, South Australia in early 2002.

If anyone out there has any information to fill in any of the blanks above I'd be very grateful. Most importently; more information about James (1) & Elizabeth Laidlow; whether James (1) was related to the eminent Engineer Sir William Fairbairn (1789 to 1874) as James (2) always claimed (not as far as I can tell reading his Biography and other information about his family, though they were also from Kelso so I'd love to know); and more information about the second and third wives of James (2).

Regards

James Edward Fairbairn
25th August 2001

PS: If anyone would like to know more about the family tree of Sir William Fairbairn (and his brother Sir Peter)please let me know. I have pieced together quite a detailed one dating between 1708 (his grandfather) and his children in the early to mid 19th century.
