Hi Ali,

When you find where/when your great grandfather James was born, and assuming it might be on the Scottish side of the Borders, post an update and I'll have a look in my database. I couldn't spot any obvious candidates in Northumberland in the 1881 census, which leads me to get my daily exercise by jumping to conclusions that he might have come south from Scotland.
There was an Andrew FAIRBAIRN in Byker in 1881, of an age to possibly be a brother to your James however.
