Dear Catie,
Yes there is a connection between these two names. I got stuck here for many years. My gt grandfather was Andrew Fairbairn b 1832 Kilconquhar Fife Scotland. His father was Thomas Freebairn b 1805 Kilrenny Fife m Ann Mackie. His father was also Thomas Freebairn b 1774 St Monance Fife m Jean Lowson. The Fairbairn/Freebairn seemed interchangable for a couple of generations even between siblings but most seem to be Fairbairn now.
