Norman,

My own researches also seem to have caught up with your's. John Fairbairn and Grizel Johnstone were my great X 5 grandparents. I am descended through their son, grandson and great grandson all named James (see http://www.fairbairn.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FAIRB2/Index.htm).

I have just made the connection with some research passed on to me some time ago by Sanna Gaffney (Jean Fairbairn of Haddington's letter) which took me back as far as John Fairbairn (b. 1692?) and Helen Grieve. I'd be most interested to find out what the results were of your final verified researches for this line.
