Neil,

You asked about Archibald Fairbairn, son of John Fairbairn and Grace Cunningham. The information that I have is that this son was born in Cupar, Fife, Scotland on September 0, 1843 and came to Upper Canada with his parents before May of 1846. The family lived in both Perth, Ontario and Brockville. Brockville, as I am sure that you are aware, is not far from Kingston which in turn is not far from Napanee. There may be a family connection but I do not have any records associating my Fairbairn family with Napanee.

I have been looking for a reference to an earlier Reverend Fairbairn who came out to Perth not long after the settlement was begun (circa 1816) but who returned to Scotland. I have always thought that the reason that John Fairbairn and my McLean ancestors ended up in Perth was because of that earlier residency of Reverend Fairbairn. Unfortunately I have not been able to find that earlier reference.

It does appear that Archibald was named for his grandfather Cunningham. Grace Cunningham Fairbairn's father was Archibald Cunningham. I do not know the parentage of John Kinninmont Fairbairn, but do have him born in Cupar, Fife on August 9, 1816. Perhaps he came out to Perth as a small boy with his father the Reverend Fairbairn and then returned later with his family.

I hope that this helps but sorry that I cannot confirm that your Archibald and my Archibald are one in the same.

Peter Higgins
