Thanks Sanna. I've looked at the document myself and it was a mis-typing on scotlandspeople.co.uk and on closer examination the spelling was actually Brydon. Also I noticed somnething that I'd missed before, that being Mary was 22 and James jnr was 11 in 1861 so couldn't be her son, but was in fact Elisabeth Laidlaws (per 1851 census). Basically I'd had much of the evidence I needed all along and missed it as never knew about Mary (as James jnr had never mentioned her) and the mis-spelling! James
