She was the eldest child of George Fairbairn, nail manufacturer and Janet Robertson. 9 other children born including William 1808-88, book keeper, Liverpool, George 1817-84, commercial traveller, Falkirk, Helen 1819-66 married William Wardlaw Smith, Glasgow and Agnes 1822-73 married Thomas Maclure, tobacconist.
