Still out there Brian?
I've included your family, George and Laura (KEMP) FAIRBAIRN in my Rootsweb's WorldConnect db LornaPotential
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=lornapotential&id=I57020

Robert appears in the 1851 census at Bothwell, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, as a civil engineer born Eckford, Roxburghshire.

I've not managed to find him in 1841 at all, or any conclusive sightings after 1855 when George (marr. Laura KEMP) was born in Liverpool.

My interest is in the Eckford connection, as several of my lot were baptised there, that and in potential candidates for the FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA project
http://worldfamilies.net/surnames/fairbairn/
who may be able to prove a link may or may not exist.

Regards
Lorna
