Just documenting where we'd got too when discussing the DNA project off list.
Stephen is shown in an extraction from the Northumberland and Durham records available on findmypast.com as
born 23 Apr, bap. 11 Jul 1802 second son of Robert FAIRBURN, labourer of Stamfordham, and Mary ATKINSON
He has a younger brother
Matthew baptised 7 Nov 1813 to Robert (husbandman of Middlefarm) & Mary FAIRBAIRN
I couldn't find the missing eldest son, but did find twins
Isabella (1st dtr of twin) and Ann (twin to above), dtrs of Robert FAIRBAIRN, native of Par. of Stamfordham, by his wife, Mary ATKINSON, born 10 Jul, baptised 11 Jul 1798 at Chollerton, Northumberland.
Couldn't spot a marriage for Robert and Mary (ATKINSON)
But Robert may be the burial 30 Jul 1820 at St Giles, Chollerton of a Robert, aged 56 of Middle Farm.
Matthew married a Mary PICKERING 12 Jun 1836 at All Saints, Newcaslte on Tyne, and was living near Stephen in 1851.
