My books are stored right now, but the story of how the Fairbairns came to be known as Armstrong goes something like this:
The king of Scotland had his horse killed out from under him during a battle. A man named Fairbairn grabbed the king with one arm and put him on his own horse. The king them declared that he would forevermore be known as strong arm, i.e., Armstrong.

Why not Google it and see what you come up with?
