I'm working on including the family on the Fairbairn One Name Study pages (http://fairbairn.lornahen.com), and I'll put Robert in the "notables" section, and will include the assorted obituaries etc I've gleaned from the newspapers, or at least a summary of some of them.
I'd guess that this FAIRBAIRN family were related to the Minister Sir David FB, as I'm picking, but we'll likely never manage to prove it, that Robert (marr. Janet AINSLIE) was a son of the James of Hallyburton, ancestor of Sir David.
(not that Sir David is shown on that chart as I understand he had no sons, and the charts on that page are all oriented towards finding dna candidates)
In the right places and timeframes, similarly successful descendants.
David's ancestor George emigrated to Sth Australia around 1839, moving to Victoria.
Robert's son John was in WA by about 1839, moving to NSW.
I've not (yet) found anything that shows any communications between the lines, so stress this is mere conjecture on my part.
One day someone will pop out of the woodwork, either with some currently obscure paperwork, or as a suitable candidate for the dna project as a documented descendant of Sir William's line willing to join the project - anonymously if need be!
His line is such a key one, and so many people claim that their FAIRBAIRNs were relations, often far more closely than the records bear out, but given the results to date in the dna project, we are able to give a good stab at how closely assorted lines match, or not, as the case may be.
Those interested in this might find the theoretical dna signature charts on the supplementary project pages of interest:
