Exactly where is Fogo??

My ancestor (3g grandfather) is Thomas Fairbairn.
I have absolutely no information on him since his parents are not listed on his death certificate.
His birthplace is listed as simply "Fifeshire, Scotland".
No town. No parish name.
He married Elizabeth Simpson (born 1837 Orkneys) in Edinburgh in 1855. In 1860 they emigrated on the ship "JURA" to Dunedin, New Zealand, where he eventually died. There were 3 children born in Scotland, I assume either Edinburgh or back in Fifeshire.
Another 5 children were born in NZ.
Is this Thomas related to anyone you have??
Where could I find birth records online since I cannot get to Scotland.
I'm getting desperate.
